Refraction of power-law spatial solitons – the Helmholtz-Snell law

چکیده
The behaviour of a scalar optical beam at the boundary between two dissimilar nonlinear media is of fundamental interest in nonlinear photonics. Here, we report the first systematic generalization of our Kerr analyses to a wider class of power-law materials. Universal refraction laws will be given, and theorysimulation agreement demonstrated.

Helmholtz bright spatial solitons and surface waves at power-law optical interfaces
We consider arbitrary-angle interactions between spatial solitons and the planar boundary between two optical materials with a single power-law nonlinear refractive index. Extensive analysis has uncovered a wide range of new qualitative phenomena in non-Kerr regimes. A universal Helmholtz-Snell law describing soliton refraction is derived using exact solutions to the governing equation as a non...

A nonlinear Helmholtz equation for optical materials with regimes of power-law type of nonlinearity is proposed. This model captures broad beam evolution at any angle with respect to the reference direction in a wide range of media, including some semiconductors, doped glasses and liquid crystals. Novel exact analytical soliton solutions are presented for a generic nonlinearity, within which kn...

The interaction of self-localized waves with an abrupt interface is a problem of fundamental importance in many branches of physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. Waveguide optics, for instance, is dominated in an essential way by such considerations. There, the full complexity of electromagnetic propagation is conveniently reduced to an equation of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) class...
متن کاملDark solitons at nonlinear interfaces.
The refraction of dark solitons at a planar boundary separating two defocusing Kerr media is simulated and analyzed, for the first time (to our knowledge). Analysis is based on the nonlinear Helmholtz equation and is thus valid for any angle of incidence. A new law, governing refraction of black solitons, is combined with one describing bright soliton refraction to yield a generalized Snell's l...
متن کاملBlack and gray Helmholtz Kerr soliton refraction
Refraction of black and gray solitons at boundaries separating different defocusing Kerr media is analyzed within a Helmholtz framework. A universal nonlinear Snell’s law is derived that describes gray soliton refraction, in addition to capturing the behavior of bright and black Kerr solitons at interfaces. Key regimes, defined by beam and interface characteristics, are identified and predictio...
